Next generation sequencing approaches for next generation surveillance of acute respiratory infections

Acute respiratory infection (ARI) remains one of the leading causes of severe illness, particularly in children, and is caused by a diverse set of pathogens. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) can at once detect and characterize multiple pathogens in a sample, potentially with a single workflow. The resulting information may have unique but synergistic benefits for primary care and public health surveillance. Join us to hear from the team at Children’s Mercy Hospital as they share their experience with NGS assay optimization and interpretation. Dr. Gummersheimer will address considerations for and performance of single- and multi-pathogen NGS testing. Dr. Selvarangan will discuss potential for integration of the resulting data with existing surveillance programs, e.g. the New Vaccine Surveillance Network, and future paradigms that might integrate routine patient testing with molecular surveillance.
