2017 San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering Volunteers
As a startup, Illumina aspired to transform human health. Our initial products enabled researchers to explore DNA at an entirely new scale, helping them create the first map of gene variations associated with health, disease, and drug response. Every breakthrough opened up a new world, and showed us how much further there is to go.
Improving human health is a mission that requires a funnel of diverse professionals. Building that funnel starts with inspiring our youth to pursue STEM careers. To reach students all over the world, we work with local schools to host a series of educational programs that inspire, educate, and prepare students for the exciting new era of genomics.
To expand our reach to the future workforce of genomics, the Illumina Foundation supports the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering and the Cambridge Science Festival in the UK. Each festival is a week-long series of events culminating in Expo Day where organizations connectyouth of all ages to STEM.Learn More
Illumina riders in San Diego's Pedal the Cause
We encourage our employees to connect on a personal level with activities related to oncology. Offices around the world have chosen local charities to support through various events, from bike rides to fundraising bake sales. For example, since 2015, Illumina has partnered with Pedal the Cause, a nonprofit organization that raises money for cancer research in San Diego. Every year, people from all over San Diego dedicate one weekend to covering anywhere from 12 to 162 miles on their bikes, raising money to fund cutting-edge cancer research.
Our mission to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome aims to change the landscape of health care. Our iHope Program aims to end diagnostic odysseys for families. We partnered with the Foundation for the Children of the Californias, Rare Genomics Institute, and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital to sequence the genomes of nearly 100 patients and their parents to better understand the genetic underpinnings of rare diseases.

Through our various outreach programs, we strive to connect our employees to the communities in which they live and work. When we look to partner with organizations from each of our core focus areas, we provide opportunities for our employees to actively participate. This ensures we are making a meaningful impact.
“At lllumina, we partner with STEM education programs to ensure future generations will have the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in the rapidly growing genomics industry. We believe innovation and collaboration bring the promise of genomics to the communities where we live and work.”
