The Scientist Names MiSeq FGx a Top Innovation of 2015
1 December 2015

The MiSeq FGx Forensic Genomics System won the #2 spot on The Scientist’s List of Top 10 Innovations for 2015.

Launched in January 2015, the system simultaneously interrogates short tandem repeats (STR) and other valuable genetic markers, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), to provide informative DNA profiles compatible with existing DNA databases, including the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

The system can help forensic laboratories improve efficiency and generate more information from difficult to analyze samples. Laboratories deploying the technology can run up to 96 samples together, a significant improvement over individual tests using a capillary electrophoresis instrument.  Since each test can generate both STR and SNP data, forensic laboratories can generate more information from a single test, even when working with difficult to analyze DNA samples and biological mixtures.

In addition to crime solving, the MiSeq FGx Forensic Genomics System can aid in the identification of human remains from mass disasters such as airline crashes or terrorism cases where the deceased may otherwise be unrecognizable.

Several other Illumina products have been named to The Scientist’s list over the last few years including the HiSeq X Ten Sequencing System (2014), MiSeqDx Sequencing System (2014), and MiSeq Sequencing System (2012).
